Volunteer Coaches

We are accepting volunteer chess coach applications now. You will not need to be a great chess player. You will be teaching beginning players from ages 10 to 16. If you have mastered chess basics, you will easily learn to use our chess curriculum and online teaching tools and resources. Our patent-pending beginner’s chess board and online help diagrams make it easier to teach and for students to learn chess basics. On September 8th, sixty-four students will start to learn chess using the Fun with Chess Learning System online platform. These students will attend a one-hour “How to use the platform” webinar taught by FwC Community Services. These students will be instructed to post questions for coaches during the week. Online coaches should answer questions and review online matches with the students on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Each online coach will initially be assigned 16 students. 32 of the 64 students will be selected to attend the onsite classes starting September 17th. At that point, the online coaches will each have eight students. We need four coaches to teach onsite at the JLM Life Center at 2622 W. Jackson in Chicago for four Saturdays starting September 17th. The onsite classes will start at 10:00 a.m. There will be two sessions, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The volunteer onsite coaches will be paid a small stipend to cover transportation and other costs. 90 minutes of Zoom training for coaches will be held on September 8th and 9th. To make it easier for volunteer coaches to schedule, there will be sessions at 10:00 a.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. each day.
