Youth Organizations and Schools

We need youth organizations and schools to identify participants. We are looking for beginners.  We need young people who want to learn how to play chess and understand the benefits they can get from chess training.  The age again is from 10 to 16. We will be accepting referrals from August 18th through September 1st.  We need a list of participants with the following information:

  • referring organization or school

  • first name and last name

  • grade, age, and gender

The referring organization will be responsible for obtaining a parent permission slip which includes a release to use the participant’s still and video images. We will provide a sample permission slip.

On September 8th, sixty-four students will start using the Fun with Chess Learning System online. These students will attend a one-hour “How to use the platform” webinar taught by FwC Community Services. These students will be instructed to post questions for coaches during the week. Online coaches should answer questions and review online matches with the students on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The first 32 of the 64 students to complete 16 online lessons will be selected to attend the onsite classes starting September 17th at the JLM Life Center at 2622 W. Jackson in Chicago. The lessons will take place over four Saturdays starting September 17th. The onsite classes will start at 10:00 a.m. There will be two sessions, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. We will hold a timed elimination chess tournament the last Saturday, October 8th. All participants will receive certificates of completion and a Chess Against Violence/Fun with Chess T-Shirt. The first, second, third, and fourth place finishers will receive cash card awards and trophies presented by program sponsors.
